Val Gray Ward's "One Woman Show"

April 24, 2008 / by Shintaku

Phenomenal.

Have you ever gone to a movie or a play and afterwards you come out saying, “Wow! That was an absolutely incredible show!” And you come out of the theatre wishing they would show it again ASAP (without having to pay for it again if you had to before) just so you could re-watch such a phenomenal performance one more time?

Well, that is how Val Gray Ward’s “One Woman Show” was for me. That night, on the seventeenth of April, a friend of mine and myself watched for well over an hour while a lady eloquently dramatized each poetic piece that she personified. Val brought such vivid emotion to pieces by Langston Hughes as well as several other renowned poets and song writers, which included a poem that her husband had written for her, and in her personification of Harriet Tubman. She recounted, sang and even cried during her incredible one woman performance, of some of the most moving pieces. For me, Val Gray Ward added new perspective and insight into and behind each particular work that she fantastically portrayed. When Val’s show was all over I knew why this incredibly talented lady, and at the age of seventy-five, had won so many international awards, which included several Emmys and a Grammy nominee. It was truly a magnificent show to such an extent that if I ever get the chance again I would definitely return for a repeat performance of her show, as well as recommend her to all and any future acquaintances. For it’s so very rare to see a performance executed with so much flair and so phenomenally!
